Finding a home tutor in Dhaka: area first, everything else second
Dhaka has more tutors than any city in the country and the worst traffic, and the second fact undoes the first more often than parents expect.
Travel time is the hidden term in every tuition
A tuition that requires a forty-five minute journey each way is a tutor spending three hours for a two-hour fee. It survives while they have nothing better. It ends the week they find a student closer to home — usually without warning, usually in the middle of a term.
So search by area before you search by anything else. A very good tutor from your own or the next neighbourhood will outlast a brilliant one from across the city almost every time.
Dhanmondi, Uttara, Mirpur, Bashundhara, Mohammadpur, Banani, Gulshan, Old Dhaka — each is effectively its own tuition market, with its own tutors and its own going rate. Search your own first and widen only if you must.
The five things to settle before the first session
Most tuitions that fail do not fail on teaching. They fail on things nobody said out loud in week one:
- Days and times, exactly. Not "evenings" — "Sunday and Tuesday, 6 to 7:30".
- What happens when a session is missed, by either side. Made up the same week, or lost?
- The monthly fee, and what it covers. Two days or three? Does it change during exam months?
- Where the tutor sits. A room with a door and a table, and someone else in the flat. This is not distrust, it is normal practice.
- How you will know it is working. A monthly script review, or a short test — something you can look at rather than a general impression.
Write them in a message to the tutor after you agree them. Both of you will forget otherwise, and the forgetting is what causes the argument in month three.
Use online for the subjects that suit it
If your child is in Class 11 or 12 and needs Higher Math or admission coaching, you do not need to solve Dhaka traffic at all. One-to-one video works well for problem-solving subjects and gives you the whole country to choose from — including tutors from engineering universities outside Dhaka who would never have been an option otherwise. For Class 1 to 5, do the opposite. A young child needs someone in the room. Class 1 to 5 tutors
Or let the tutors come to you
Rather than searching, describe what you need once — subject, class, area, days, budget — and let tutors reply. Posting is free and your details are not published: the board shows the area, not your address, and never your phone number. Post a tuition
