What Should a Home Tutor Cost? A Straight Answer for Bangladeshi Parents
Almost every parent starts here, and almost nobody gets a straight answer. Rates vary enormously, tutors are reluctant to quote first, and there is no published scale.
So here is the plain version.
Typical monthly rates
These assume the usual arrangement — three days a week, an hour to ninety minutes a session, at your home in a major city.
- Class 6 to 8, general subjects: Tk 3,000 to Tk 6,000
- Class 9 to 10 (SSC), Maths or Science: Tk 5,000 to Tk 9,000
- Class 11 to 12 (HSC), Physics, Chemistry or Higher Maths: Tk 6,000 to Tk 12,000
- English medium, O Level and A Level: Tk 8,000 to Tk 20,000
- Admission preparation, engineering or medical: Tk 10,000 to Tk 25,000
Outside Dhaka, expect these to run twenty to thirty per cent lower. Inside Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara, expect the top of each range or above.
The three things that actually move the price
The subject. Higher Mathematics and Physics at HSC level cost more than everything else, because far fewer people can teach them well. This is a supply problem, not a fairness problem.
The tutor's background. A student from BUET, Dhaka University or a public medical college charges more, and families pay it, because they cleared the exam your child is preparing for. We publish tutors by institution so you can see who is available before you discuss money.
Your area. Not because of postcode snobbery, but because of traffic. A tutor spending two hours a day travelling to you has to price that in.
When a low rate should worry you
A rate far below the range is usually one of three things: a tutor with no experience, a tutor who will not last the year, or a tutor who intends to teach four students in the time they are billing you for one.
The most expensive tuition is the one you pay for six months while nothing improves. Judge on fit and reliability first; the difference between Tk 6,000 and Tk 8,000 is small next to the cost of a wasted year.
What is worth paying more for
- Recent experience of the exact exam. For admission preparation this is the whole thing.
- Reliability. A tutor who turns up every week beats a brilliant one who cancels.
- The ability to explain twice. Ask, in the first meeting, how they handle a student who does not understand after the first explanation. The answer tells you a great deal.
What we charge, so you can compare properly
BengalTutors takes a placement fee in the first month only — 25% from you and 25% from the tutor. On a Tk 8,000 tuition you pay us Tk 2,000 and pay the tutor Tk 4,000 directly that month.
From month two we charge nothing. You pay the tutor the full Tk 8,000 and no money passes through us again.
Month two therefore costs you more than month one, which surprises people, so we say it plainly before anyone pays. The complete model with worked examples is here.
Before you agree a rate
Agree the days, the times, the subjects and the start date in the same conversation as the money. Most disputes are not about the amount — they are about a Friday session nobody had confirmed.
Look at tutors and their own declared rates before you commit to anything, or post what you need and let tutors come to you.
