Balancing Tuition Work With Term Time: A Practical Timetable
Most students who quit tuition do not quit because the teaching was hard. They quit because they took three tuitions in a heavy term, fell behind on their own coursework, and dropped everything at once.
That is avoidable, and it is mostly a matter of what you agree before you start.
How much you can actually carry
- One tuition is invisible. About twenty-five hours a month including travel. It fits any term.
- Two tuitions is the honest maximum for a normal engineering term. Around forty-five hours.
- Three tuitions works in a light term, during a long vacation, or if all three are close together and online.
The mistake is agreeing to three in December, feeling fine, and still holding three in April when your own sessionals land.
Agree the exam weeks before you begin
Say this in the first conversation, before any money is discussed:
> "I have my own examinations twice a year, roughly in these months. During those two weeks I will need to pause or reschedule. I will tell you a month in advance."
Families accept this readily when it is raised at the start. The same request made two days before you disappear reads as unreliability, and that is what ends tuitions and reputations.
Write it into the arrangement. Ambiguity always resolves against the tutor.
Cluster your days
Two tuitions on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday is far less disruptive than two tuitions spread across five days. You protect whole days for your own work rather than losing an evening to every one of them.
The same applies to geography. Two students in one area, ideally one after the other, turns two commutes into one.
Online changes the arithmetic
An online tuition removes travel entirely. That is often an hour a session in Dhaka traffic — for three sessions a week, twelve hours a month you get back.
It also removes the area limit. From your hall you can teach a student in Sylhet or Khulna who cannot find an HSC Physics tutor locally, and there are more of those students than you would guess. Online tuition works differently on fees — the first month runs through us, and after that it is largely yours.
Protect the first twenty minutes
Do not arrive and begin teaching. Ask what they did in class this week, what the last test looked like, where they got stuck. Two or three minutes of that will redirect the entire session towards something useful.
Tutors who skip it end up teaching the chapter they prepared rather than the one the student needs, which is how a family concludes after two months that nothing is improving.
When to say no
Say no to a tuition that requires more than forty-five minutes of travel each way. Say no to a family that wants five days a week. Say no when you are already at two and it is a heavy term.
A tuition you take and abandon after six weeks costs you more than the one you declined — the family is left stranded mid-syllabus, and word travels.
Take fewer, keep them longer. That is where tuition income actually comes from: the tuitions that run for two years, not the ones that pay well for a month.
