The ICT paper is free marks, and most students give them away
Of all the subjects parents hire tutors for, ICT is the one where a small amount of tuition produces the largest visible change. Not because it is easy, but because it is finite.
Why it behaves differently from the other subjects
The ICT syllabus is short, the question patterns repeat, and most of it is learnable by anyone willing to sit down with it for a few weeks. Nothing in it requires three years of foundation the way Higher Math does. A student who is genuinely weak in ICT in September can be comfortable by December — a claim you cannot honestly make about physics.
Yet it is routinely the paper students leave until last, because it is "only ICT". That is exactly why it costs them.
The parts that decide the grade
- Number systems — binary, octal, hexadecimal, and the conversions between them. Pure technique, entirely learnable.
- Digital logic — gates, truth tables, simplification. Marks here are close to guaranteed once the method is drilled.
- Programming basics in C — the part students fear most, and the part where the questions repeat most.
- HTML — small, memorisable, reliably examined.
- Database concepts — definitions and simple queries.
A competent tutor will tell you within one session which of these five your child is losing marks on, because it is nearly always the same two.
What to look for in an ICT tutor
Someone who can write code, not only describe it. Computer science and engineering students at any university, and ICT-teaching students from the public and private universities, all qualify. The test is simple: ask whether they will make your child write programs by hand, on paper, the way the exam does. If the honest answer is that they will only explain code on a screen, keep looking — the exam is handwritten.

How long it takes
Two months, two days a week, is enough for most students to move from lost to comfortable — provided it happens before the final revision term rather than during it. Booked in the last month, ICT competes with every other paper and loses.
