Engineering admission preparation: what a private tutor adds that coaching does not
Almost every serious engineering admission candidate in Bangladesh is already sitting in a coaching centre with a hundred other students. So the useful question is not whether to hire a tutor — it is what a tutor should do that a coaching centre structurally cannot.
What a coaching centre is good at
Pace, coverage, and a mock exam every week with a rank attached. That is real value, and for a disciplined student it may be enough on its own.
What it cannot do
It cannot look at your script and tell you why you lost those particular marks. In a room of a hundred, nobody is tracking that one student keeps making sign errors in vectors while another is fine at the mathematics and simply runs out of time.
That is the whole job of a private tutor at this stage, and it is worth stating plainly to the tutor before you hire them:
- go through the last three mock scripts, question by question
- classify every lost mark — not known, known but wrong method, careless, ran out of time
- spend the next fortnight on whichever category is largest
The four categories need completely different treatment, and a student who does not know which one is costing them will keep practising the wrong thing.
Subjects, in order of leverage
- Higher Math — the largest single share of the paper and the hardest to fix late. Start here. Higher Math tutors
- Physics — mechanics and electricity carry it. Physics tutors
- Chemistry — the most memorisable, the easiest to raise in the last two months. Chemistry tutors
Who to hire
Someone who sat the same test recently and cleared it: a BUET, CUET, KUET or other engineering university student. This is the one situation where the name genuinely predicts the value, because what you are buying is direct memory of the paper — its pace, its traps, and how they decided what to skip.
Ask them one question above all others: what did you leave unanswered, and how did you decide? Admission tests are won on triage as much as on knowledge, and a tutor who can teach the triage is worth two who only teach the physics.
Timing
The final three months are for practice and script review, not new material. Anything a candidate does not know by then is usually cheaper to skip than to learn. A tutor willing to say that out loud is doing their job.
