Finding a Chemistry Tutor Who Makes the Subject Make Sense
Chemistry is where the memorising strategy finally fails. A student can carry Class 8 and 9 on recall alone, then hit organic chemistry in HSC and find that nothing can be remembered because nothing has been understood. The reaction is usually to memorise harder. It does not work.
The right tutor breaks that habit early.
What good Chemistry teaching looks like
Mechanisms before reactions. A tutor who teaches why a reaction happens gives your child a tool for questions nobody has seen before. A tutor who hands over a list of reactions to memorise is preparing them for exactly one exam, and not well.
The periodic table as a map. Properties, trends, bonding — these follow patterns. Once a student sees the pattern, half the memorising disappears.
Equations balanced by hand, every time. Tedious, and the fastest route to fluency in stoichiometry, where a large share of marks sit.
Practical work taken seriously. Titration and salt analysis marks are among the easiest available and among the most casually thrown away.
The usual trouble spots
For SSC, chemical reactions, the mole concept and acids and bases. For HSC, first paper qualitative chemistry and the mole concept, and second paper organic chemistry above all — plus electrochemistry, which is much easier than students expect once someone explains it properly.
Ask a candidate directly: how do you teach organic chemistry? The answer tells you nearly everything. "I make them memorise the reactions" and "I teach the mechanism, then the reactions follow" are two different tutors.
Who tends to teach it well
Medical students are excellent Chemistry tutors — organic chemistry is a large part of what got them in. Chemistry department students from DU, CU, JU, SUST and the engineering universities are equally strong, particularly on the physical chemistry that medical candidates practise less.
Practical points
Chemistry needs written practice, not just watching. Agree at the start that the tutor will set problems and mark them. And if your child has a school practical exam coming, say so early — a few focused sessions on titration technique are among the best-value tuition hours you will ever buy.
