O Level and A Level Tutors in Bangladesh: What English Medium Parents Should Know
English medium families face a problem the national curriculum does not have: the pool of tutors who genuinely know Cambridge or Edexcel is much smaller than the pool who say they do.
The syllabus is different, the marking is different, and the difference shows up in marks.
Why a national curriculum tutor may not transfer
A tutor who was excellent at HSC Physics is not automatically able to teach A Level Physics, and the reasons are specific.
- The syllabus is arranged differently, with different depth in different places
- Marks are awarded for method and reasoning in a way HSC marking often does not require
- Practicals and data analysis carry real weight and are examined in their own right
- Command words matter. "State", "explain", "describe" and "discuss" have precise meanings and students lose marks for answering the wrong one
A strong subject specialist can adapt. But ask directly whether they have taught the board before, and which one — Cambridge and Edexcel are not interchangeable either.
What to ask in the first meeting
- Which board, and which specification code? A tutor who knows their board answers this immediately.
- Have you taught this syllabus through a full exam cycle?
- Which past paper series do you work from? Teaching against past papers is the single most reliable indicator of someone who knows the exam.
- How do you handle the practical or coursework component?
The answers separate genuine experience from confidence very quickly.
What it costs
O and A Level tuition runs higher than national curriculum — commonly Tk 8,000 to Tk 20,000 a month for three sessions a week, and more for Further Mathematics or for a full A Level subject taught from scratch.
The premium is a supply question. Fewer tutors can do it, and those who can are in demand from October onwards, when families realise the exam session is close.
Start looking early. In September the choice is good; in January you take what is left.
Where the strong tutors come from
Two groups, mostly.
Graduates of English medium schools themselves, now at university here or abroad, who sat the same papers recently. Recency matters more in these boards than people expect, because specifications are revised.
Subject specialists from the public universities who have taught the board for years. Slower to find, worth keeping when you do. Tutors listed by institution are here.
Online is worth considering
For O and A Level, the tutor pool is thin outside Dhaka and Chattogram — and in some subjects thin everywhere. Online tuition widens it considerably, and these subjects suit a screen well: the work is written, and a shared document or tablet handles it better than a whiteboard.
If your child is in a district town preparing for A Level Physics, online may not be second best. It may be the only realistic route to a specialist.
Before you commit
Ask for a trial session and sit near enough to hear it. Watch whether the tutor teaches the specification or teaches the topic in general — the difference is worth two grades.
And tell us the board when you enquire. "A Level Chemistry, Edexcel" gets you a useful shortlist; "A Level Chemistry" gets you a long one.
