Medical admission preparation: one paper, one day, no second chance in the same year
The medical admission test is a single MCQ paper. There is no viva, no second sitting that year, and — critically — a wrong answer is not free. That one design decision should shape everything about how a candidate prepares, and most candidates only understand it after their first mock.
Accuracy beats coverage
In a paper with negative marking, the student who answers 85 questions with 90% accuracy beats the student who answers all of them at 75%. Knowing *when not to answer* is a skill, it is trainable, and almost nobody trains it deliberately.
This is the best possible use of a private tutor. Go through the mock scripts and separate the wrong answers into two piles: did not know and guessed and lost marks. The second pile is usually larger than the student expects, and it is fixable in weeks rather than months, because it is a decision habit rather than a knowledge gap.
Where the marks live
Biology carries the largest share, and it rewards steady memorisation more than cleverness. Chemistry follows. Physics and General Knowledge are smaller but decide the very top of the list, where the margins between candidates are tiny.
Follow the current year's official circular for the exact distribution and any changes to eligibility or marking — it is published each cycle and it is the only version that counts. Do not let a tutor prepare your child against last year's pattern from memory.
Who to hire

The part nobody puts in an advertisement
This year is hard on the candidate, and a tutor who notices when a student is exhausted rather than lazy is worth more than one with a slightly better rank. Ask your child, after two weeks, whether they can ask this tutor a stupid question without feeling stupid. If the answer is no, change tutor early — there is no time to fix it in month four.
