Is This the Right Tutor? How to Tell If Your Child Is Actually Learning

Exam results come once or twice a year. Waiting for them to judge a tutor means finding out far too late. These signals appear within two or three weeks.

The test that settles it

Ask your child to explain the last thing they studied, out loud, without the book.

If they can, the tuition is working. If they cannot — and most cannot — then hours are passing but nothing is being retained. This one question tells you more than a term of reassurance.

Good signs, in the first month

Your child talks during sessions. Not just listening. Ask, or sit nearby for twenty minutes and count.

They ask the tutor questions. A child comfortable enough to admit confusion will learn from an average tutor. A child too embarrassed to ask will learn nothing from a brilliant one.

Homework changes shape. Better tutors set fewer, harder, more targeted problems rather than pages of repetition.

The tutor tells you things you did not know. *"He is fine with the theory but cannot set up the equation."* That is a tutor who is paying attention.

Your child stops dreading the subject. Often the first thing to shift, and it precedes the marks by months.

Warning signs

The hour is all explanation. Watching someone solve problems is not learning to solve them.

The tutor cannot say which chapters are weak. After three or four sessions they should be able to name them. If not, they are teaching the book, not your child.

"Everything is fine" every single week. Nothing is fine every week. This is a tutor avoiding a difficult conversation.

Sessions drift. Arriving late, leaving early, long gaps for chat. Politeness is not teaching.

Your child cannot tell you what they did. Ask after each session. Blankness is data.

Watch the direction, not the level

A child who was at 40 and is now at 50 is being taught well, even though 50 is a poor mark. A child at 75 who has been at 75 all year is not. Judge movement.

Also allow the right amount of time. Two or three weeks is enough to see engagement change. Marks take a term, sometimes two if the gap goes back several years.

If the signals are bad

Do not replace anyone yet. Work through the four reasons a tutor is not producing results first — most of the time it is a fixable diagnosis problem rather than a bad tutor.
