Home Tutor Fees in Dhaka: What Parents Actually Pay

Nobody publishes tuition rates in Bangladesh. Parents ask relatives, get three different answers, and end up guessing. This is our attempt at a straight answer.

What a home tutor costs per month

Rates below are for one subject, three days a week, one hour a session, in Dhaka. They move with the tutor's university, the area, and how urgent the tuition is.

• Class 1 to 5 — Tk 2,500 to 4,500. A capable undergraduate is enough.
• Class 6 to 8 — Tk 3,500 to 6,000.
• Class 9 to 10 (SSC) — Tk 5,000 to 9,000. Higher for Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
• Class 11 to 12 (HSC) — Tk 6,000 to 12,000. Physics and Higher Maths sit at the top.
• Admission preparation — Tk 8,000 to 20,000, and often taught in a small group to share the cost.

English medium and English version usually add 30 to 50 percent, because the pool of tutors who can teach the curriculum is much smaller.

What actually moves the price

The tutor's university. A BUET student teaching Physics or a medical college student teaching Biology commands more, and the reason is not prestige. They cleared an admission test on the same syllabus your child is sitting, recently, and they remember which questions decide the grade.

Travel time. A tutor crossing Dhaka in the evening is spending two hours on the road for one hour of teaching. Tutors who already live in your area are cheaper and far more reliable, which is why we match on service area rather than home address.

Days per week. Five days a week is not five-thirds the price of three days. Expect around 40 to 60 percent more, not 67.

Number of students. Two siblings taught together typically costs 1.4 times one student, not double.

We are open about this because the industry generally is not.

For home tuition, we charge a one-time placement fee in the first month only: 25 percent from the parent and 25 percent from the tutor. On a Tk 8,000 tuition that means you pay Tk 6,000 in month one — *less* than the tutor's rate, because you keep 25 percent back — and the tutor receives Tk 4,000 directly from you at month end.

From month two you pay the tutor the full Tk 8,000, directly. We take nothing and no money passes through us.

That month-one to month-two difference is deliberate and we would rather you saw it here than felt ambushed later.

How that compares

Most tuition media in Bangladesh charge the tutor alone, and they charge a lot:

• TuitionByte — tutor pays 50 percent of the first month
• Dhaka Tuition — tutor pays 60 percent of the first month, capped at Tk 3,600
• BengalTutors — tutor pays 25 percent, parent pays 25 percent

Splitting it matters more than the headline number. When a tutor loses 60 percent of their first month, they have every incentive to take the tuition off-platform, skip the agency, or quietly raise their rate to cover the loss. A 25 percent share keeps the tutor honest and keeps your price real.

Online costs less

Online 1-to-1 runs roughly 20 to 30 percent below home tuition for the same tutor, for the obvious reason: no travel. It also opens up tutors who could never reach your area, which matters most for the scarce subjects — Higher Maths, Physics, and English medium curricula.

Before you agree a rate

• Settle days per week and hours per session first. A "Tk 6,000 tuition" means nothing without them.
• Ask what happens if your child misses a class. Most tutors will make it up; agree it in advance.
• Agree the payment date and stick to it. Late payment is the single most common reason a good tutor leaves.
• Use the trial period. If the fit is wrong, say so in the first week rather than the third month.
